Of times not too distant tovarish…

Growing up *mostly* in the ‘West’ I missed out on a lot of this whole West vs East saga. However, it never ceases to amaze me the artistry and music that the Soviets came up with despite their fairly bland surroundings. For many years this world was shrouded in impenetrable secrecy (the expression Iron Curtain was not coined by accident) and it is not till more recently that a lot of these publications and stories have been told. Although this is all history, its fascinating looking at how the ‘other side’ portrayed themselves. Below is a video of the CCCP National Anthem and it is a fantastic piece of music irrespective of Soviet politics and the State propaganda machine.

…Proving once again that bleak surroundings are no match for human enginuity and imagination.

The sad thing is, like Germany, we’re only now (re)discovering what great breakthroughs have been achieved behind the curtain.

But we must also remember that propaganda took place on both sides. The West was no different as I learned in school that the Soviet Union was the “evil empire” and that Communism itself was “evil”. Of course the Soviets learned the opposite. Lo and behold, turns out it was the people in power who were evil in both cases.

I’m sure some of the stories about them were true, but we’re now hearing the same term applied to other regions. How much of it is just more propaganda?
