A ‘pointy ear’ post
Disclaimer : Warning, this post is almost completely devoid of logic.
I have been watching Star Trek: Enterprise, a show that has elicited as much condemnation from hardcore trekkies (read basement dwelling costume clad nerds) as sheer unadulterated praise from it’s loyal fan base. I started watching this show again as Virgin 1 are doing a complete run through at the moment. I am not sure what it is about this particular instalment of the trekiverse, whether its the strong performance from the likes of Scott Bakula, Jolene Blalock (who is more than a Enterprise 7 of 9 as a cynical friend observed to me,) Dominic Keating , Connor Trinneer and John Billingsley or just the humility in which the stories are told from the prospective of humanity’s newly found spacefaring footing.
Regardless of why, it has sucked me in entirely and I am so irked that it was cancelled after just four seasons. That is not to say the show has not had its ‘ups and downs.’ The radical change employed in Season 3 to attempt to snatch back viewers took a few episodes to get used to but the single story arc was almost too well developed. Season 4 had the unfortunate task of trying to follow on, building on season 3, which of course it could not. The later episodes of this season were disappointing which was a real shame and the less said about the finale the better. However all of this has left me (and as it turns out many others) hungry for more. Several amateur writers have for some time creating new fan-fiction from single episode plots to even three new virtual seasons. The quality of the writing is likely to vary although I am very excited by the existence of this body of work and will no doubt be tied up for a little while reading it.
UPDATE: I have glanced at the virtual seasons and they look quite entertaining, however I also discovered some rather …. ‘specialist taste’ material. For some reason there seem to be a few authors who like to focus on same sex sci-fi themed ‘pairings,’ particularly between Archer and Trip which is a bit disturbing… I hope this does not put anyone off visiting the site as the majority of the stories are clean and well written, just be aware such material exists there too.
