I'm glad you mention FreeNAS (although it isn't Linux based as you mention) it is a cool piece of software.

Thanks, Gary

It's true that power consumption can be an issue when setting up a system for firewall/router use.

I found a way around this by buying old thin-clients off of eBay.
They're generally effcient and consume about the same power as a plugged-in laptop. Or you can use old laptops for this purpose as well...
Plus, after the dot-com bubble, there are plenty of leftover technology still floating around.

Good overview, I have been wrestling with the power consumption issue as well. My dilemma has been do I run multiple applications like FreeNAS, IPCop, MythTV, etc. as virtual machines or is it better to roll my own solution via a Debian or CentOS base system? Running multiple virtual machines is going to require a much more resource intensive machine to run effectively. I am glad you plan on doing some follow up posts and I look forward to reading your findings.

Yes, I wrote about b43 back in december (http://whyamistilltyping.wordpress.com/2007/12/17/bcm43xx-is-now-deprecated-woohoo/) and I am rather looking forward to Ubuntu 8.04 because of this :) I did try to install it manually on 7.10, but whilst the driver worked fine, I could not sucessfully use the new b43-fwcutter...

Actually the broadcom chipsets just got a better driver with kernel release 2.6.24 (rather than using the old 'bcm43xx' you can now use 'b43' driver)
