I have been watching UFO: AI for some time, and have been fairly impressed with the progress they’ve made on this project. It’s definitely more stable, and getting more playable. The latest release (2.21) seems to have a better balance between human and alien, though it still seems pretty heavily weighted towards alien.

I’ve played some with UFO: Extraterrestrials, and I found a couple of good community-written mods I used (BMan’s is one I remember), which added some extra things (such as a mini-map), as well as a more X-Com like feel. I think it probably is worth checking out.

I’ll have to keep an eye on the HL2 mods, though these projects have a tendency to either attempt to reach too far, or just dissipate into the ether.

Thanks! I did not know about UFO: Extraterrestrials, but am going to check it out right away.
I have been playing these since they first came out, and still like to dust them off every
few years. I agree with everything, but am a little more critical of the The Altar Games, although I agree the first is the best but only rates a 6/10. I would rather play the originals now, then any of the Altar games again.

Great post. I’ve tried the Aftermath, Aftershock, Afterlight series of games and I have pocket UFO on my phone, but I’ve not heard of some of these other XCOM inspired games.

I’m going to be keeping an eye on the HL2 mods for sure and I might give X-Force: Fight for Destiny a spin. Although I preferred the original XCOM over all, I was always a little bit more of a fan of XCOM: Apoc’s realtime / turn based toggle and I liked it’s faction system.
